The Third Series coins mark Singapore’s progress as a nation. The coin designs feature national icons and landmarks.
Countries generally change their circulation coins every 20 to 30 years to incorporate new security features, update the coin designs and to mint coins more cost effectively.The Second Series coins, which were introduced between 1985 and 1987, had been in circulation for more than 25 years.
New security features were incorporated into the Third Series coins, especially those of a higher face value, to stay ahead of counterfeiters and maintain confidence in the use of the country’s currency.
The new coins are made of multi-ply plated steel and are less costly to produce. The security features in the new coins include a customised electromagnetic signature (EMS) for each denomination; and for the 1-dollar coin, a bi-metallic composition (outer ring is brass plated and inner circle is nickel plated) and laser mark micro-engraving of the Vanda Miss Joaquim, the national flower of Singapore.
The designs were also updated in the Third series coins to depict icons and landmarks of our nation, economy and society that Singaporeans young and old can identify easily.
The new Singapore Third Series coins will feature five of Singapore’s national icons and landmarks:
• Merlion, a traditional symbol of Singapore;
• Port of Singapore, one of the busiest in the world;
• Changi Airport, one of the best airports in the world;
• Public Housing, home to more than 80 percent of Singaporeans; and
• Esplanade, iconic centre for performing arts in Singapore.
The new coins will have larger denomination numerals for easy identification and features to facilitate identification by the visually-impaired. The coins are progressively sized by denomination, with the 5-cent coin being the smallest and 1-dollar coin being the largest.

In the making of the coin, brass is used. Brass is an alloy. An alloy refers to a mixture of metals and with other elements. Besides coins, there are many other materials in our daily lives that are made of alloys. Example: Utensils and surgical instruments ( stainless steel ), ornaments ( pewter or brass ).
Pure metals are soft. When a force is applied onto the metals, the layers of atoms within the metals will slide.
